This is sort of relevant as this is the way that I host my ham radio website.
While looking for suitable hosting solutions I came across " Run yur own web server using linux and apache" on sitepoint.com http://www.sitepoint.com/books/linux1/
Yes I admit ( before anyone flames me out ) I'm not a fan of windows although I use XP at work every day, and that I run a mac G5 at home. I had played around with various flavours of linux for a couple of years after being encouraged to by colleagues at work, on an old PC that would otherwise be sitting in the corner gathering dust.
So I took the plunge and bought the book. It came with an install CD and easy to follow instructions, and now I host two websites from home. I'm by no means an expert, and I get a former student of mine to come over and fix anything I cant fix myself, but I can tell you that the install and initial setup was VERY easy, even for an oldie like me. And, unlike either windows or mac, the hardware requirements are very modest. You can easily run a linux webserver on any PC that previously ran Windosws 95.
I thoroughly recommend the book if you have little or no experience with linux. The install disk I got was for Fedore Core 4, but I imagine by now, as FC5 has been out a few months, they may well have changed it.
Success with this project encouraged me to start an IRLP node - yes they run on linux- and that is almost ready to get on air. ( Hopefully I'll have it running before Chrissy. )
